Quick Answer: A garbage disposal that hums but does not spin is jammed. The motor is receiving power (hence the hum) but something is preventing the grinding plate from rotating. In most cases, the jam can be cleared by turning the flywheel manually with an Allen wrench from the bottom of the unit. If the motor has overheated from running while jammed, it needs to be reset. If the motor runs but the plate still will not turn, the disposal may need replacement.

You flip the switch and hear a low, steady hum from the disposal, but nothing happens. No grinding, no movement, just that buzzing sound. This is actually one of the easiest plumbing problems to diagnose because there is really only one thing happening: the internal flywheel is stuck and the motor cannot turn it.

What Causes the Jam

The most common culprits are hard items that fell into the disposal. Bones, fruit pits, bottle caps, small utensils, and pieces of broken glass or ceramic can wedge between the impellers and the grinding ring, locking the flywheel in place.

Stringy or fibrous food waste is another frequent cause. Celery stalks, corn husks, artichoke leaves, and onion skins can wrap around the impellers and the flywheel shaft, creating a tangled mass that prevents rotation.

Sometimes the jam is caused by corrosion. In older units, internal components can corrode from exposure to moisture and food acids, causing the flywheel to seize against the housing.

How to Safely Clear a Jam

First, turn off the disposal switch and unplug the unit or turn off the circuit breaker. Never put your hand inside a disposal, even when it is off.

Most disposals have a hex socket on the bottom of the unit designed for manual rotation. Insert a 1/4-inch Allen wrench into the socket and turn it back and forth. This manually rotates the flywheel and usually dislodges whatever is causing the jam. You should feel resistance, then a release when the obstruction clears.

If you cannot turn the flywheel with the Allen wrench, use a wooden broom handle inserted from the top to try to rotate the grinding plate. Apply gentle pressure against the impellers to break the jam free.

Once the flywheel moves freely, press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit (this resets the thermal overload that tripped when the motor overheated), restore power, and test the disposal by running cold water and turning it on.

When the Disposal Needs Replacement

If the motor hums but the flywheel will not budge even with manual rotation, the motor may have burned out from prolonged jamming. A burned-out motor smells hot and may trip the breaker repeatedly. At this point, repair is not cost-effective and a new unit is the better path.

If the disposal is more than 8 to 10 years old and has required multiple jam clearings, the internal components are worn and replacement is a practical decision. A new disposal with at least 3/4 horsepower handles most kitchen waste effectively and reduces drain clogging caused by poorly ground food particles.

A licensed plumber can install a new disposal, ensure the drain and dishwasher connections are properly configured, and verify that the electrical connection meets code.

Prevention Tips

Run cold water before, during, and after using the disposal. Feed waste slowly rather than dumping large amounts at once. Never put grease, bones, or fibrous vegetables into the disposal. And keep small items like bottle caps and utensils away from the drain opening.

FAQs

Why does my garbage disposal just hum and not grind? The hum means the motor is receiving power but the flywheel is jammed. Something is physically blocking the grinding plate from rotating. Clearing the obstruction with an Allen wrench from the bottom usually resolves it.

Can a jammed garbage disposal burn out? Yes. Running the disposal continuously while jammed overheats the motor. Most units have a thermal overload that trips and shuts the motor off to prevent permanent damage. If you reset the overload and the motor runs but the plate still does not spin, the motor may be burned out.

Should I use the reset button on my garbage disposal? The reset button is a thermal overload protector. Press it after clearing a jam and allowing the motor to cool for a few minutes. If the button keeps popping out, the motor is overheating and the unit likely needs professional attention or replacement.

How long do garbage disposals last? Most residential garbage disposals last 8 to 12 years with normal use. Units with lower horsepower ratings tend to jam more frequently and may have shorter lifespans.

Our water heater began spewing water this morning.  John was the first plumber in the area to answer my call, and was able to get to my house within 10 minutes of the call.  He fixed the problem promptly and for what seemed to be a reasonable price.  He was friendly and informative.  I will definitely call John again and will recommend him to neighbors.  Thanks, John!

John has done numerous plumbing projects around my house and has always done excellent work.  He's quick to respond to my inquiry's and even replaced my water heater on a Sunday.  Most recently, I had him install a water purification system and new faucet.  His prices are reasonable and he will continue to be my go-to plumber.

Project: Install, Repair or Replace Plumbing or Fixtures

Comments: I am very pleased. I've had John do the top priority job of repairing a leaking drainpipe and his work looks to be top notch. I'm definitely thinking of using him for the larger job of repiping the whole house (replacing the failing M-type copper with L-type). And again, John's bid is within my budget considerations. Highly recommended.

Comments: We had them run a snake from our sewer line out to the street, as we have lots of trees with roots that sometimes get into the line. They came as scheduled, did a great job and the price was as quoted.
